here is my method for the one handed star,

    http://nebelfuchs.com/shoeman/one%20handed%20star.mov
I'd be happy if you guys shared more methods, i'm trying to figure out what kam would call "speed method" where it takes only 1 or 2 stages to form the star but i have yet to figure something like that out..

I guess I might as well provide all the regular links

I like how you always show up when theres a rubber band manipulation discussion somewhere tongue.gif
why don't you share with us some of your stuff? or do you still don't have a cam? :\

    Hey guys.

I would just like to clarify: Although rubber band manipulation has recently become a little popular online, it's been around probably since the invention of the rubber band itself. And it's been "popular" where I come from for as long as I can remember. It's not popular as in you see everyone doing it, but most have encountered it when they were younger.

For example, when I was really young, a friend was "bragging" about the one-handed star to me (which is not a real star, it's actually the criss-cross deal), and he didn't want to teach it to me. So I asked my dad. And then he showed it to me, just like that, expressionless haha. I was like, "WTF it's easy". And then my nanny taught me the star, double-star and others. Some other "weird" rubber band tricks I got from friends.

Come to think of it, the rubber band thing is probably a culture thing from a province in our country, where my dad grew up. Because my nanny was also from there. And a cousin of mine, from my mother's side also knows what I know with rubber bands, and he's nearly 10 years younger, and he grew up in the same province hehe. There's also a "native" game that we used to play when we were younger, called "Dampa". We would get on our knees, cup our hands, then slap the ground to "blow away" the rubber band. The one whose band lands the farthest, wins haha. I haven't really seen any kids play Dampa nowadays, though. Dang playstation haha.

Have any of you guys had a similar experience in your country? Just curious. By the way, if any of you know the Japanese program "Maskman", which is like a forerunner of the Power Rangers crap, I remember they had a wicked-ass multi-person lightsaber glowing-garter manipulation at the closing credits. I'll try to find a video if there is one online. smile.gif

    Edit: I've found the video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcSlEpL2yQk

This is the Tagalog ending. The Tagalog dubs back then were pretty good. The intro song was extremely popular, and I've heard some guys had memorized it. Then during the opening, they would sing-along the first few lines, turn of the TV while still singing, and then turn it back on during the end, and the singing would still be in-sync haha. The manipulations happen starting @0:42

Oh those rubber band manipulations in that coolio old jap vid, I rmb I used to do them with my little sis with a long thread a long time ago. Its quite cool, but you need 2 people to do it.

I can't really remember how to do it, its been like 8 years or something. But if you look at the Cat's Cradle in the vid provided, you can more or less figure out how to do it. Just that the starting may be abit tricky.

Errr...no idea...too many? I'm not that good in all of them, but I do some xcm, sport stacking, balisongs, zippo lighter, yo-yos, astrojax, rubiks cube, ring manipulation, sunglass manipulation, phone, even wallet lol. If it's manipulation, I've probably tried (a few that I have not tried: dice stacking, devil sticks)

That's called the Interlace, and it's not hard at all. But it deserves its own video since there are several variations that can be done with it.

How hard is it to make this? how long did it take you to be able to perform it this good?

  26. Kam
    Date: Wed, Jun 11 2008 08:01:14

I've been doing for maybe 6 months now? But I don't practice that often.

I wouldn't say it's "hard" to do it once you know it. But it was pretty tricky to come up with the method in the first place. The secret was to take the two handed method, substitute fingers as much as I could, then for the movements that required more fingers than I had in one hand, I learned to use temporary hold positions to allow me to achieve what I wanted. It's basically a lot of mount and break movements since you only have 5 fingers.

Come to think of it...the hardest part is to keep ur fingers apart since it takes a lot of strength to hold the band with so much tension. When I first succeeded in doing a full double star, I couldn't do the same move again without a 10 min break. The band would also snap after about15~20 repetitions >_<

But as you get better, you do the move faster, which means less strain on ur fingers, and also less tension on the band.

  27. xN
    Date: Wed, Jun 11 2008 18:06:40

kam, have you tried using to bands? or would that be way to much resistance to do most moves?

  28. Kam
    Date: Fri, Jun 20 2008 07:37:07

I don't see a point of using two bands unless u're trying to them to make more complex figures. Using two bands for the same move seems like an unnecessary extra strain on your fingers.

About two weeks ago I learnt the Two handed star and double star. Without looking for a tutorial I found my own way to do a one-handed star.

This method can be done fairly quickly (if you get good at it, which I'm not). I wanted to know if this method has been discovered already or not, and if it's better or worse then existing methods.

This isn't a tutorial, it's just to show the method.

Daffy, as impressive as that trick is at first sight, it's actually maybe one of the simplest rubber band tricks for someone to learn, just think about it for a minute or two with a rubber band in your hand, i'm positive you'll get it.

This is one of the many methods to do a single star. But I think this one is one of the fastest? :/

    Hope you like it ^^

  42. Kam
    Date: Tue, Mar 17 2009 23:04:01

@Thewave: that looks a bit weird because only one of the 5 tips is twisted.

However, that does have potential...if you can get all 5 tips twisted and still maintain the star shape, then I think it'll look pretty cool. wink.gif

PS: you could use some better lighting on your video, or try to adjust that with your video editing software afterward.

  43. MatthewK206
    Date: Wed, Mar 18 2009 05:09:02

Gah, Kam, think you could do a really quick written tut on how to do that little snap thing? Where you hold the rubber band in the tips of yoru fingers dangling, snap your hand one way and back again, and then it's intertwined around all your fingers?

  44. Thewave
    Date: Wed, Mar 18 2009 06:10:54

@Kam- the video was done in 1 minute XD didn't realy care about lighting and stuff but if I'll make a real video of it- I'll adjust my settings.
And I'll try and twist all the fingers smile.gif

Matt, I could, but I don't want to. It's not hard to figure out the basic technique on your own, but it's easy to do the trick poorly and show everyone what you're doing. I'll make a proper video tutorial with proper technique and some variations.

    Please be patient wink.gif

  48. Kam
    Date: Wed, Mar 18 2009 08:49:29

@Matt: yeah...you actually should have a preparation phase to introduce to your audience what you're going to do. Otherwise it'll come as a total surprise and people will just keep asking you to do it again and again (not a good idea unless you want to reveal how you do it).

There are also some variations such as catching a rubberband mid air into an interlace, transferring it to the other hand (can't do it well enough yet), and linking it to other moves. I plan on including as much as I can comfortably film on the video.

@krouls: that's very fast...I knew someone would come and beat my speed ^^ I should have worked harder to get my best time on camera xD

what method do you use? seems different than the one I teach...is that TyAnn's method? If so...you're using pure speed o.O Because I think that method has more steps than mine. which means you are moving ur fingers a lot faster than I am xD

  49. krouls
    Date: Wed, Mar 18 2009 09:09:02

Yes Kam, it is TyYann's method. I got interested on the star thingy so i searched it on youtube then i just found TyYann's tutorial

uuhhmmm and Kam rolleyes.gif I also posted a tutorial of your interlace biggrin.gif sorry for not asking permission to you, because you invented it

  50. Kam
    Date: Wed, Mar 18 2009 09:18:08

hmmm...not cool, not cool man sad.gif

I know it's an easy trick, which is why presentation plays a very important role. And I'm sorry to say this, but as fast as your interlace is...it's lacking proper presentation (not your fault since I haven't show the whole presentation on my videos either).

I would appreciate if you removed or made ur tutorial private until I post a proper one up. thx ^^

cool! I came up with a triangle-like star shape by accident. I'll take a picture or something sometime. I remember someone I saw at summer camp twist a rubber band up in their fingers. When they let go, it spun around the index finger really fast! Still trying to figure it out. dry.gif

  54. Heva
    Date: Thu, Mar 19 2009 07:23:16

gee this is a form of manipulation i like alot...I could do:

    Arrow -> t -> star -> x -> Y -> v -> L -> i -> o

and i keep learning stuffs from my friends and learnt double star...most of my tricks are with two hands except maybe 1 of them where you stretch the rubberband with your middle figer and thumb and make a star inside a somewhat rectangle that is "fillet" with a cross in the middle...

  55. Jtrophy
    Date: Sat, Mar 21 2009 23:12:41

Here are some tricks i learned.

    4 tricks:

    1) Interlace - still to slow... i have to work on speed >.<
    2) one handed star
    3) spinning on the index finger
    4) teleport o.O?
