    The Gathering
    One morning, Zombo had received a phone call from an anonymous caller. A self-proclaimed philanthropist, he had chanced upon UPSB and read about how difficult it was to hold a universal gathering. According to him, it was unfair for mere physical separation to restrict the potential of a well-intentioned hobby. He proceeded to outline a plan for a universal gathering.

    The caller had offered his own private island and mansion as a venue for the gathering. Spinners would fly into Montreal and lodge in a hotel overnight. SpinZ members were also invited to cover the event. Then a private jet would be chartered by the anonymous man to fly everyone to his island. Since there were not enough bedrooms in the mansion to accommodate everybody, the gathering was supposed to last for half a day at most. The spinners would be flown back to Montreal on the same day, where they would travel their separate ways. The man would cover the costs of everything, only asking that he remain anonymous in return.

    The logistics were ironed out months ago, and everything was happening as planned. The gathering had been a very enjoyable event, with demonstrations given by various spinners, as well as several mini-tournaments. The spinners had stepped out of the mansion, prepared to leave when suddenly the waiting jet on the runway exploded into flames. Mute with shock, the spinners were at a loss for words. They were now stranded, but the greater danger was far more immediate …

    The starting location for every player is the Beach.

    To buy items, you must move to the Merchant's Store and stay there for the action phase.

    You can buy an unlimited number of items in a single action phase.

    Alright, only 3 people are pending on follow-up actions now.

    Note: This time I was lenient and allowed for follow-up actions at the merchant's store if you had money remaining. But to speed up the game, future actions at the merchant's store are limited to a single PM. That is, you must list all your transactions all at once and it constitutes your action.

    I would like to know what everyone has discovered.

    At the merchant's shop I found that you can go to the beach to find jewels to sell to the merchant for more money.

    What have you guys found at your seperate locations?

    The lock pick only has a 25% chance of unlocking a locked door, if it is not successful it breaks and you can't use it anymore, but if it works you get to keep it. You can attempt to unlock a locked door X amount of times until you run out of lock picks, or you can keep attempting to unlock the door until you run out or you are successful.

    Food rations heal 3.5, count as a full action.

    I'm wondering, does the majority of people have the same objective?

    I win if the Pencil Council impostors die. There's also a small catch to it, but I won't say anything about it yet.

    Anyone else got this? I think everyone's being a bit too secretive about this, it's not mafia.

    A few things I need to mention.

    * When I said earlier that you won't get PM'd descriptions of rooms you've already visited, it meant only if there were no visible changes (this should have been implied, hopefully). If some aspect has changed, you'll be notified of the change(s) only.

    * You can only carry an item in one of your hands. The only exception to this is if the items are part of a set or are logically connected to each other, such as a weapon and spare ammunition for it.

    * If you've forgotten how full your backpack is, what items you have, or how much money you have, you can send me a PM at any time and I'll refresh your memory, although you should be keeping track of these things yourself.

    * Assume that it begins getting dark at 9:00 pm and that nighttime begins at 10:00 pm. Also, assume that the lights automatically turn on at 10:00 pm for simplicity's sake (but there are still light switches in every room). There is no "energy" in the game in the sense that you don't need to ever rest.

    * If a replacement cannot be found for Huronix within a few days or so, I will regrettably have to withdraw him from the game. In such a case, any items of interest in his possession will be made available at the Merchant's Store.

    I inherited this mansion from my late grandfather a few years ago. I have temporarily lent the estate to the pen spinning community as a venue for their gathering. They think I am merely a magnanimous patron of pen spinning. In reality, I want to drive the art into extinction. As part of the Pencil Council we can spin pencils with ease but despise pens since they are useless, as is pen spinning as a whole. Pencil spinning is the future.

    I have invited spinners and SpinZ members to the gathering and I will be sending you along to eliminate both groups. Once the gathering is finished, the plane will not depart the island as expected due to an “unfortunate accident.” Everyone on the island will then be stranded, setting the stage for our plan.

    Regrettably, I have no information on the number or identity of Spinz members at the gathering, but they should be considered more dangerous than the regular spinners. Through the modified Blackberries I have provided, you can discuss strategy amongst yourselves. (Note: You are allowed to communicate with each other whenever you want using private messages. It does not count as an action and is not seen by others in the same room.) Remember to conceal your identities at all times and not to attract unwanted suspicion. Use deception as much as possible.

    Awesome, I know you are a good marksman, so I have prepared a sniper rifle for you. It is in a briefcase on top of the rafters inside the cabin, east of the mansion. Once you have procured the briefcase, I suggest you move to the hill west of the mansion and assemble the rifle there. You will have a good vantage point and a clear view of the west wall of the mansion. There are only two bullets, so make it count.

    There are secrets of the mansion of which I know, and I will divulge them here, but there are likely secrets I have not found. My grandfather was rather fond of intrigue.

    Firstly, the stove in the kitchen is actually an elevator used to send food up and down. A single person can fit into the food elevator and move either up or down a floor. Ascending will place you in a hidden room behind the art room. Descending will place you in a hidden room behind the wine cellar.

    Secondly, there are five paintings in the art room. They contain heat sensors that, if activated, cause hidden metal gates to fall and bar the exits. Behind each painting is a switch. Their functions are as follows:

    * The switch behind the painting of the staircase retracts the metal gates. If the gates have not been triggered, then this switch has no effect.
    * The switch behind the painting of the bee shoots a non-poisonous dart that hits the switch operator.
    * The switch behind the painting of random spatters of colour explodes the microwave in the kitchen
    * The switch behind the painting of the magnifying glass opens the secret room containing access to the food elevator.
    * The switch behind the painting of the door locks the master bedroom door if it is unlocked and unlocks the door if it is locked.

    Thirdly, there is an underwater cave in the lake north of the mansion. To reach the cave, dive in the southwest corner of the lake. You’ll need scuba gear to dive far enough. Follow the cave until you emerge from the water, at which point you’ll see a door to an underground room you will find of interest. To open the door, speak the word “Marcy” into the speaker. The room is small and the limited oxygen supply will prevent you from staying there indefinitely.

    Fourthly, there is a button behind the towels in one of the bathroom cabinets. When pressed, it temporarily locks the doors and windows of the master bedroom while releasing poisonous gas from the ventilation system. Anyone who is in that room will die.

    Fifthly, I have set up a bomb in the chandelier in the ballroom. To detonate it, enter the code 1725 into your Blackberry and press Enter. (Note: For the purposes of this game, you can detonate the bomb from anywhere and others in the same room as you will not notice. This does not count as an action.) It will surely cause heavy injury to those in the ballroom.

    Finally, my wife and I got into an unfortunate accident while I was driving her to the lake in our Jeep. I survived, but she wasn’t so lucky. I would appreciate it if you could clean up the aftermath and confiscate the remaining evidence inside the vehicle.

    *Discretion (Passive): Able to sense presences in the dark and remain completely concealed when choosing to hide in the dark.

    Yes, my only regret is that some people actually liked it. But peeps taking 5 days to submit actions and essentially 0 discussion in the thread won't sustain the game. But don't worry; this was only a trial game. There'll be a better version in the future, so long as people are actually willing to play.

    If you were at the beach, a random die was used each action phase to determine whether you got caught in quicksand (1/6 chance) or bit by a scorpion (1/8 chance). Retro somehow managed to trigger both these events (about a 2% chance).

    Also, very few people made use of the library. It was lenient in that you could choose from all sorts of books and in some cases select books I had not previously considered.

    * If you had read up on lock picking, I would've raised your lock picking chances up to maybe 75%.
    * If you had read a mercantile book, you would've been able to haggle prices at the store. If you tried to seek discounts without this knowledge, I had to deny it.
    * Some people were creative in that they read up on anatomy, and I rewarded this with a 75% kill rate with a knife (if target was not observing or defending).
    * You could've also read up on chemistry, in which case all herbs/plants/potions and their effects would be identified when you picked them up.
    * There were other possibilities, such as firearms, sneaking, etc.

    Note that I said you can't do anything to the merchant or steal from him, but this did not preclude conversing with him, for example.

    Pen Spinners can spin any kind of pens: regular pens, SpinZ, pencils

    PC members can only spin pencils and will fail at spinning regular pens and SpinZ

    SpinZ members can only spin SpinZ and will fail at the other two.


    It is a quick way to determine who is what.

    Bats will bite 100% for 1 damage.

    I still can't believe nobody accused Ralys of murder.

    there is dark in the cave, so because of this:
    Ralys – Ninja

    I think the problem is that there's so much to do and only one action at a time which is annoying. You have a room with like 5 stuff to look for and you can only check one at a time, which leads to 5 turns spent in the room in order to make the most out of it. 5 turns?! that's fucking ages!

    thats why you gotta pick the most important action, team up with other players to discover more things at once, talk with other players to share what you discovered etc

    this is still a team game, you will never find everything in the game alone.

    there was so many ways you could have generated discussion in the beginnign:

    for example:

    each person give their opinion on the use of each item.
    each person give their opinion on what each room contains.

In the same amount of time, one could argue that you could stab everyone in the kitchen, cook a meal in the microwave while searching the bodies, then get into the oven (food elevator). I think minche was the best at searching for things. She found something interesting on every turn, so it's not impossible if you make smart decisions.

    the next game will be smaller, like 6 players, to give an atmosphere similar to Clue.

    it will also be invite only, so that we get to pick players we know are active and can play the game the right way. the only way for non-invited players to join is through the replacement list.

    this would be the only way to make sure the game flows.

    Probably sometime in July, when I have time to work on it. I have some rough idea in my mind. The format could be 5 innocents + 1 killer. The killer wins if there is an unsuccessful lynch or a certain amount of time passes; the innocent side wins by lynching the killer. Another alternative is simply like Clue, where the first person to solve the crime wins. Either way, I may have to think about eliminating PMs altogether to keep such a game flowing. If you were active enough in The Gathering, you'll be invited to join.
