I've often seen a Pen as kind of a hip-hop rosary, so definately there's a meditative aspect to PS.

Well, if you look at it that way, do you even know what meditation is? Meditation is when you have complete and udder control of your thoughts. And when meditating you are usually working towards a goal like growing a plant or something. This was roughly how it was explained to me once. So I say no blanking out is not meditation.

It does get trance-like after a while.

if you're extremely focused on controlling your pen, aren't you in control of your thoughts? -

I guess if you put it that way... yes? But then again I was more replying to zero's saying that he blanks out, blanking out is not meditation. Eh, even though you bring up that point I'm still not convinced that pen spinning could be a form of meditation. -

There's a misconception that meditation is about zoning out. This is mostly not true. Some meditation however, is about getting lost in a specific thought, and to a large extent, this is what pen spinning accomodates. The spinner's thoughts get lost in the pen, just as the monk's thoughts get lost in the rosary.

Manipulation != mediatation
So no. -

Meditation is not about control of your thoughts.
It's about clearing your mind to observe any thought that flows into your concious. Active passivity.
Penspinning could facilitate/inhibit meditation, depending on the person, but is not a form of meditation itself, unless you use it as such... I require complete stillness and relaxation of the body, but background noise helps me. -

This is just not true. Meditation is exactly about controlling your thoughts.

That can take different forms, including minimizing, or even eliminating altogether, different kinds of thoughts. Pen Spinning would certainly include this.

I dun't think so, quite the oppisi for me, I ahve to concentrate everything I have and it' really fustrating sometimes... I think sitting down crosslegged and focusing on your breathing is more meditating than penspinning by thousands of times.

meditation does not make you zone out, in meditation, you clear your mind and you end up being more aware of your environment than normal. Its just like hypnosis is a method of inducing meditation or deep rest, and does not make somebody blank out and become your slave. FUCK HOLLYWOOD

I would say it's not exactly meditation, but it isn't very far from it. It's relaxing, it's awarding, it is even soothing. But on the other hand I don't get that same conscious feeling when I'm pen spinning as I do when meditating.
Not that I meditate lol. I just pray -

In terms of phylosophy, penspinning is exploitable, you know, we can do metaphors and comparaisons, so yeah, we can medit to some things with penspinning.
And by the way, It may be relaxing.
Edit: the leader of Nirvana (the group) once said that the destruction of instruments was brigning him to nirvana. Is brighing sfsr to nirvana? -

yer id agree
when your trying really hard to learn a new trick especially a difficult one, you kind of space out and lose track of time and go into an almost trance like state where you focus on nothing but the pen
or at least thats what happens to me lol
