Anyone made an attempt to make their own custom grips?
you could probably make a mold of an existing grip and make a grip from that.
i would try if i had the stuff to make it
    any thoughts?

That'll be a bit hard to do

u could try to melt an existing grip into a mold but after it's been melted, the texture becomes
kinda bumpy and not as "grip like" for lack of a better term

its just never quite the same feeling when it comes changing the shape of plastic stuff

hmm theres probably some mix of ingridients that would produce a grip-like material that you could pour into a mould and it would set like jelly

This is how silly putty was invented.

    I'll look into it?
probly make a mold with plaster of paris or w/e its called.
over a existing grip then fill mould with some liquid that will set into some rubery stuff

I'm pretty sure you can find mix for silicone.
I think that would definitely be grippy enough.

Hmm this could be pretty cool if someone got it work. I should do some reserch.

The science behind rubbers is surprisingly complex. Not only do you have to worry about what you put into the batch but you also have to worry about, temperature, humidity, cooling times. I think it would be the best if we let the professionals deal with it wink.gif .

    we could try :/
it would be vcool.JPG if we got it to work well and were not making rubber but like maybe something like silicon which can easily be made (i think)

You can always make use of a handy-dandy tool called a penknife to customize pen grips.

kinda the point of this is so u dont have to buy a pen and get the grip of it...

that gives you a grip thats not smooth

Well obviously if you don't know how to form a nice shape
I meant for those who do know how to form a circular type shape out of it

I was thinking about using vinyl clay (Sculpy) to make custom grips. This stuff is pretty heavy when it hardens and could be cutout and shaped really nicely. Not to mention its permenant. Custom paint jobs with an air brush could make for some really sweet spinning pens.

Alrite since i'm kinda already doing this I guess I will fill you guys in. Almost all pengrips are made out of thermoplastic elastomers. There are a few reasons why they use this. main reason....it is cheap. Then it is a bit "squishy" and a bit stretchy. Metals, latex, rubbers don't have this combination of attributes. It is costly to duplicate a grip. It may sound easy.

just mold pour harden and bam! unfortunetely it isn't that easy. Nearly all companies will make items based on iso 9001 and other standards which means they need the technical drawings for the parts. If you want to duplicate something you will have to hire an engineering firm or an engineer to reverse engineer the actual parts. Then the mold itself will be around 5K or more to "machine" then you have your operating costs from there. So yes it can be done but there are some barriers.

ive experamented with using regular duct tape and electrical tape for grips... i just wrap it on untill its as thick as i want then im done. with duct tape...ive found that the tape eventually starts the come off...and thats anoyiing

i havnt tested electrical tape long enough for it to come off... but im pretty sure it would do the same.

if there was a way to keep the tape from comming off... it works great. awesome grip + you decide how thick/long it is + it can fit on any pen.

what i do is i put some tape and wrap it around the pen with the stick side up then put another small piece to make sure it stays. since its too sticky i make the tape a little dirty with dust or something. i know its rough but it kinda works

Yes, I have to agree with Eric there. Making a grip to our specifications, would be ungodly expensive. I mean come on who else spends so much time on finding grips, making personal prefernaces. I'm just thinking that if someone did actually try this, they would be dissapointed with their results.
