General Discussion / Kings of UPSB

New Competition

Okay, so I got this idea from a skating forum. It was originally called King of the Cafe, because it was called skaterscafe. And this KOTC was based of the Thrasher's King of the Road, with pro skater teams in it. Anyways, the competition kind of goes like this.
There are competing teams that try to reach the highest amount of points. The team with the most points wins. The points are categorized(e.g. aerials, combos, random, etc.) and consist of points from 10-200. 10 points being the easiest stunt/trick and 200 being the hardest. The winners receive the title of kings of UPSB and maybe some pens, which I won't provide because I can't mail stuff.
I just thought this would be a fun thing to do. I wanted to make UPSB more exciting. Tell me if this a good idea by voting in the poll. Comment if you wish to add any more ideas.
If this does kick off, we would need some one to help provide prizes hopefully, judges, and category ideas and tricks to go in the categories(one of the categories is definitely going to be random).

its funny how the people who voted no aren't commenting, personally i think the board needs something like this the board is kinda boring

I don't like it. Ripping ideas from other forums and trying to run them on UPSB usually sucks.

the idea is OK, if you want to set it up, go ahead I am sure ppl will join.

Try to convince Penwish for prizes? This would be fun, so it's like a UPSB exclusive tournament?

  9. Aries

i dunno sfsr i think this will run quite nicely. anyways maybe we can convince penwish to sponsor.

UPSB will be more exciting ^^

Yea basically it will just be our WC team competing so I don't like it. Thrasher Magazine 11Thrasher11 you guys get it mhmm.

Yea... if we go points wise then we already know who the winner is wink.gif . So I don't think this would work well here meh.

There's a large division between the elites and the mundane.
I think it'll just be a competition between the elites, honestly.
This competition won't encompass all of UPSB. sad.gif

  15. -JC-
    Date: Sun, Jun 1 2008 18:38:09

if this thing happens, it'll really be a competition between jsut like 7-10 people
but perhaps you could set up divisions like...
    -under 1 year
    -1-2 years
    -2+ years

    or something like that
i know that some poeple who are 2+ years aren't that good and should be competing in the 1-2 years division, but that's something that really can't be avoided =\
and same thing for the fact that tehre are some under 1 year spinners who should be in the 1-2 year category

so in order to make it fair for everyone, have like 1-3rd place or 1-5th place for each division so that if the best spinner in the under 1 year section wins since they spin like a 1-2 year spinner, at least some other under 1 year spinners can have a chance at it too

  16. Duckrus
    Date: Sun, Jun 1 2008 23:48:00

Well now that I see it JC's way, maybe. But it looks like we would have to have like a pre-tourny skill assessment thing.

Ladder Battle & Elite Six anyone? The top spinners in those should already be counted as the "Kings of UPSB" or whatever. You may as well just re-start & re-tool Elite Six.

  18. Mats
    Date: Mon, Jun 2 2008 00:41:42

Elite six never did really work out and I'm not sure this game would either. UPSB and the pen spinning world is really boring right now though, a world cup, the ladder, an active tack-on game, a couple of pen spinning competitions ran by pen spinning companies, a battlezone with a new battle every day or two and the forum games section active daily. There is really nothing to do here game-wise. unsure.gif

    Date: Mon, Jun 2 2008 00:43:21

wait a minute...since upsb is : UNIVERSAL pen spinning board, can't anyone from anyboard (eg. french, japanese, korean, german etc.) participate?

  20. sketching
    Date: Mon, Jun 2 2008 00:44:18

As long as they register here.

  21. Tialys
    Date: Mon, Jun 2 2008 00:48:10

Kings of UPSB? Sounds like a re-make of Capture the Throne. Also, there are other factors to consider, like exact point values, the difficulty of linkages themselves, not only tricks. How do rotations work? Mutlipliers? Something else? Is it a single combo or freestyling for a certain amount of time? Would people be motivated enough to submit videos? Etc. You need to have it planned out pretty well before you bring the idea to UPSB, because right now your description is pretty vague.

  22. Aries
    Date: Mon, Jun 2 2008 01:48:31

Don't worry I got it all covered. As for people saying it will just be between the "Pros", that's why there are teams. Plus they are challenges not best combo=500 points. Like for example a list would consist of:

    Con't:
    -5+ con't FL baks 50
    -10+ Con't Tornados 25
    -5+ con't FL TA 20

    Random:
    -ps over a 2 story roof/ledge 30
    -burn a kt 150
    -break another spinners pen 10
-drop your pen in class con't till your teacher takes your pen away 30
-not spin a pen for more than 5+ hours 100

any1 can win, you just need to be creative. people can also win extra points by the vid they turn in. like Best edited vid. best team name.

btw its like a collab you guys bunch up all of the vids of the stunts/tricks you did into one great team vid.

Okay a few things here confuse me:

Are you seriously going to make a list of all cont tricks and do this for all of them? Who is going to judge the scaling of how hard tricks are? What about if someone does 11 reps for cont FL Baks, that scores the same as 5?

Not only are these lame and some hard to film, but they are also worth more points than some INSANE tricks.

Be cool. That's the whole reason why I made this topic(btw it's titled Kings of UPSB). I was asking if anyone would like to judge and give me creative and good ideas for some tricks/challenges.

Basically I want pen-spinning to get out some where rather than always in a room. It's becoming so dull, not to be offensive.

Would this be a cool challenge:
-Get a girl/boy to kiss you while pen-spinning 100 points (500 points for same sex on the lips)

My bad I could have sworn it said king... I would have thought this would work better as a single competition.

The thing is, most spinners use a webcam to film and you aint gonna be able to film much outside of where your computer is, or if you have a laptop, outside of your house, which means it's always gonna be in a room. The only way to get stuff not filmed in rooms is to encourage people to take digital cams, camcordors or their laptops out somewhere with them to spin. I question however, how much a change in location is going to do if you find the pen spinning uninteresting. This game also seems to me to be quite childish? Maybe it's my age showing a bit but it lacks the seriousness and therefore competitve edge of other competitions on here (such as ladder).

It's very easy and also gives an unfair advantage to anyone who is bisexual or gay so I don't think that is a good idea.

Maybe you should read up on capture the throne? (actually the wiki seems to have nothing on it... Someone remind me to write that up tomorrow).

To make it so that other people can be incorporated (lower level spinners) you could add in things like, longest thing spun, and you'd have to film yourself using it and measuring it

Stuff like approach a stranger and teach them a trick

    You know
Things that doesn't take an elite to do, just fun things that anyone can do and you can just make em difficult for everyone

    like
ask a stranger to borrow a pen and just run away
    idk
be creative there is a lot of cool things you can think of

i really think this idea is awesome
road of the road is fucking awesome
i've been in one in my town
    they are seriously a blast
not all the stuff even has to be PS related
alls we have to do is make a big list with a point values give everyone a list and a deadline then tally up who wins at the end
    XD

didnt read aries post till i posted this
but yeah, i like the idea a lot
your point values are fucked though

  30. 11Thrasher11

Damn I thought it would all be pen spinning related. Seems to be who can be the most rebelious by doing something pen spinning related. If and when you create signups, I'm in.

  31. Aries
    Date: Tue, Jun 3 2008 04:02:41

Lawl. Scott is the man. Btw, it's not road of the road ;p. Scott can be the creator of the points challenges/tricks since his are the best so far.

As for the theory that only the rebellious can win this, as it was said before by Scott and me, there are different challenges for every kind of person. Like the nerdy, the obessesed, rebellious, cool, etc. Anyways you get the point.

We can also make a KOU(King of UPSB) for a single competition.

People should really use a camcorder or portable camera, they're WAY more useful than webcams. If you can't buy one, ask one from a girl, they ALWAYS have cameras(a.k.a. myspace/facebook pics).

Scott I still can't stop obessesing over your ideas for this competition and how your motivating this. I WUV U.

I have to agree with Mats on the 'same amount of points for 5 and 11 cont baks'. And also you would have to take amount of spins into account, and there are a lot of tricks that can be done continuously.

This one wouldn't work if two pen spinners lived close to each other, most people know someone who can do at least one trick.

  35. Tialys

The game doesn't sound too serious... Maybe that's a good thing, though, otherwise it'd be a lot like the Ladder.

Okay guy I got an idea! Besides of the King of UPSB, we could have a spinoff, a section of the forum called something like "showoff", or anything that suggest this is to show anything in order to look best, and have a system to judge who is the best in other domains than pure penspinning.

people could do things like penspinning/other manipulative arts at the same time, or the competition of the faster spin, the best master of short/light mods, or other strange things.

Edit: nah, this looks not enough serious... Okay I request help to make this idea something realisable, to refine the idea.

In the politically correct time in which we find ourselves, is Kings of UPSB truely an appropriate title for this? Might one suggest that a more suitable title be found, as if a girl (or team of girls as the case may be) wins this competion, they could surely not be called the 'king(s)' as this infers their gender is male.
