Just want to see how many people would be interested in a forum dedicated to serious discussion (as opposed to the light-hearted discussion in off-topic). Of course, the same rules would apply as off-topic, and certain topics would be disallowed. Note that it wouldn't be a debate section per se, just a place to voice our own opinions on serious subjects that matter most to us.

Hmm I cannot vote, nor can I null vote.

Personally, I would love to see a serious discussion forum, however, I question how many members of the board would actually participate. I believe thus far I've only seen 3-4 members who will actively engage in a serious discussion of any sort.

Quite frankly, I don't see the problem with a serious discussion forum. If you can promote the opposite (i.e. Spammer's Bin, UPS/B/), I don't see why you couldn't extend off-topic in the other direction. All you have to do is remove posts that don't add to the discussion. Members could help mods here by reporting such posts. Trolling presupposes the topics will be likely to cause flame wars. Well, such topics don't even need to be posted (e.g. theism vs. atheism) in that case. I was thinking of less contentious topics. And I'd be the discussion moderator to ensure the discussion stays on track. The reason I can't post such topics in off-topic is that nobody takes that forum seriously. Even if they did, the serious topics would be mixed up with the non-serious ones.

A serious PS philosophy section that follows the same rules would be another good idea. Just look at the old UPSB and the quality of discussion there compared to here. Doesn't anyone ever get tired of only reading spam? There should be a balance.

    Edit:

    QUOTE (nhk)
"Many countries in the world promote freedom of speech, and Canada and the USA are no exception. Although the name Off-Topic may imply that topics other than Pen Spinning are allowed in this forum, for reasons of bandwidth and other circumstances, the UPSB recommends that members refrain from debates/conversations regarding religious, political, controversial (such as abortions etc.) and illegal matters in a standard Pen Spinning forum. Let's make it clear though, matters could be either right or wrong, only depending on the point of view of the speech maker. From past experience, religious and political conversations within the Off-Topic forum tend to become charged up, with members becoming increasingly more aggressive in trying to persuade other parties on their views. This could potentially strain relations within the PS community. Thus it's something that we shall try to avoid. If and when members become interested in the likes of religious, political, or even out-law conversations, please use a search engine such as Google and search for the appropriate forums for the respective areas of your preference and not use the UPSB for these purposes.

Note: The UPSB encourages members to stay within the judicial laws of their respective countries. The UPSB does not condone nor promote any illegal and/or out-law behaviours and activities. The UPSB does not hold responsibility for violations of the law by any specific individual behaviour."

that statement was for UPSB2, I don't think it's applied here.

alright so let's put it this way.

    - this is a pen spinning forum.
    - I have a limited number of moderators.

It therefore makes sense to direct our resources exclusively on what matters, namely pen spinning, hence why off-topic is lightly moderated.

The other thing is that I'm not convinced that there is a need for serious discussion. I can't really imagine what kind of things you want to discuss "seriously" on a PS forum, unless your standard for serious is low.

So if you want to do this, I'd be glad to compromise by offering you the status of moderator for this new section so that you can moderate it in whichever way you see fit, without burdening my staff on non-PS matters, while promoting intelligent discussions. Others who are willing to make this work can later be appointed as well.

If it was moderated well, I don't see any harm in it. But what makes a "serious" discussion if you try to say away from relgious and controversial topics?

Alright, let's give it a shot. I can supply the topics no problem if nobody can think of any. It'd be somewhat like an off-topic philosophy section. You can make me moderator and I'll appoint assistants as I see fit. I can make a set of rules by tonight.

P.S. Is the serious PS discussion forum possible too? I have a lot of topics for this one, and I think it'd have greater appeal. In particular, I was thinking of bringing some of the good topics from the old board and seeing if views have changed since then.

the philosophy section is meant for that so no... I think that by simply creating pertinent topics in that section, one can raise the quality of discussion. it's not an oft used section anyway.

@ post 11, i dont see the point of having a serious discussion forum if you're going to limit how serious the discussion is. therefore, i don't think you should exclude topics such as religion, abortion, sexuality...
i think topics like the iraq war thread should be moved into this section

EDIT: ok i just realized it's already there... zombo i think you should post in the forums relating to it when something is actually carried out. like that video thing sfsr suggested. lol or maybe im just retarded
