Welcome to my tutorial on probably my most successful mod to date. I am not sure if I will even be able to top this one! I was even able to make this mod in two versions, capped and retractable. I love this mod because it fills the 5 main criteria that i look for when making a mod:
1) It is 21 cm
2) It has lots of grips. Not too many (like the GSXA), but it has just the right amount
3) It is completely balanced
4) It is writable
5) It is stable, looks good, spins well and has a large amount of customizability (if that is even a word 0.o)
~
[Name of Pen Modification]: G2-CTE Vortex
[Center of Gravity]: COG=COP
[Length in Centimeters]: 21cm (is the prefered length, but can be adjusted to your personal liking)
[Weight in relative terms]: G2-CTE Vortex
[Style]: Double sided/Writes out of one side
[Estimated cost]: $12+ USD (depending on how many G2 grips you use)
~
[Pens Needed]:
-[Pilot G2] (1x)
-[ColorTwin/KeiTyo/Miffy&Melanie/SuperTip sign pen] (1x)
-[Uniball Signo] (2x) (tips only)
-[Bic Round Stic) (1x) (inktube only)
-[Pilot G2 Grip] (2x for the one in the tutorial, 4x for the all black one and 6x for the one with three rings on each side)
-[Extra Grip Sections] (2x) (one signo grip cut in half or 2 of the thread sectinos on a G2 grip work best)
*the grips can be anything you would like them to be. G2 grips are just prefered and fit best with this mod
~
[Materials]:
-[Cutting Tool]
-[Pliers]
-[Tissue]
-[Celophane Tape]
-[Teflon Tape]
-[Sand Paper]
~
[The Mod]:
*This version of the mod is alot more expensive and uses Sailor Gel grips and Airfit grips as well.

[Q/A]:
This mod can write, right?
Of course. Just take off the "cap" that has the inktube tip inside of it and write away.
How heavy is this?
I would have to say that it has the same amount of momentum as a Dr. KT
How much spinning room is that?
Same amount as a Dr. KT
How customizable is it?
You can either have a black or a white body, with any color Bic Round Sic ink, and any color G2 grips that you can find.
What would be a good reason for me to make this?
If you live in the US and you are a heavy pen spinner, and you have no way of getting a Dr. KT, this mod could be a good sub. You can easily find G2\'s, Signo\'s and SuperTips here.

So if a pen isn't as heavy as a KT it's not heavy enough? I consider signos heavy. -
Date: Sat, Jun 7 2008 19:26:49
the reason why this one is so heavy, is cuz the ends are a combination of grips, G2 pieces, tape, teflon, clicker parts AND signo tips. and those are mounted onto a somewhat hollow body. so all that put together creates alot of momentum.

So I now have one of these mods. The barrel feel with an outsert is particularly nice. It's like a cross between an RSVP body and a Comssa body in that it's grippy, but not too much so.
While it may weigh about the same as a Dr. KT, I would not recommend it as a KT substitute. It doesn't, in my opinion, spin like it. The KT has all of its weight concentrated at the end of the cap, whereas this mod has its weight distributed amongst the outer thirds of the body. However, it's still a nice mod to spin, and the bonus of it being writable makes it a great mod for me. Plus, it doesn't draw the ire that KTs do...
...yet.
Nevertheless, I'm proud to say that I own one of the originals: -
Date: Sun, Jun 29 2008 06:04:57
Guitrum made me one!!! It's a good pen to spin, and it does seem to spin a lot like a KT. Now I can trade my KT's!!!

I <3 the black one,Guitrum!
The mod is really nice and it isnt so expensive.I like its function(i mean: for spinners who cant get KT)!
But the colors arent so good for me...but,how you said on ventrilo, you had to keep it "a cheap mod".
+This mod is Retractable/writeable.I think it will be very popular.
Keep modding

u need one g2, as in, one full g2
if u see below that, u need an extra g2 grip -
Date: Tue, Aug 5 2008 00:08:04
It doesn't have to be a G2 grip though, it can be anything that fits.
-

no no, those are the extra grip sections
look veeery closly at the materials and then at the mod

I have finally actually the used mod, on request of Guitrum nagging me like no tomorrow. The weight seems a bit more for the mod, almost comparable to a Dr. Kt. I'm not quite sure if this mod is worth the money, you could probably get the Dr. Kt for just about the same amount. That and i've never been a fan of the G2 grips as the primary grips(replaced my GA grips with rsvp impulse grips) Overall, not bad, but I'd try to find a cheaper way to make it, the quality doesnt reflect it as much. Yet again, nothing against Guitrum, the mod isn't worth the money imo.

XD thanks for the post imatt!!!!
but the mod costs about 12 dollars, whereas a KT is 25-30, so idk what the monetary issue is there....
well, if you make the mod with 4 g2 grips, that gets pricy, but the cheapest way is to use 2 g2 grips and 1 signo grip cut in half. thats the 12 dollars.
-

I prefer authenticity...
KT is only worth 20$
2 Keityo/colortwin/miffy = 4-5$ Max
2 dr. grip tips= 10$
2-3 sailors = 5$

XD yea, the KT has rights over two strips, so i thought why not three? the only bad part, is that it requires six G2 grips for that style..... for me thats not a problem, but for some people out there, they hate that. but you can still make the mod with two G2 grips!
and yes, the links arent working.... again.... ill fix them when im not busy, thanks for the warning -

you could if you would like to, but the diameter of the pen should be greater than that of the grips so they should just tightly fit on, but its alright if you want to superglue them on.
its more or less personal preference -
Date: Thu, Oct 9 2008 20:05:56
Thanks, I ended up not glueing them. My vortex is pretty messy O_O but it spins good. Good mod

Amazing mod!
I have been looking for a new mod I can write with, and here it is. Now i just need to get the parts... Maybe enough to make 2... I'm new at this and the retractable portion looks a bit tricky.
Big thanks for the tutorial -
Date: Fri, Oct 10 2008 04:15:05
Wow.. I jsut amde it, it looks sexy, AND it spins good, a lot of work but all american peices and this is quite amazing.... A clearer tutorial wud help tho =]
btw my hands are quite sore but it seems comparable to the kt, the hardest part is the grips it takes a lot of strengh and wearing heavy duty gloves helped a lot...
Differences in spinnability compared to original KT
KT, is more end heavy, different kind of momentum, this mod is more evenly distributed in weight.
Kt is much simpler, your hands don't burn after you make the kt > - <
Kt "feels" heavier
Kt has a smoother spin but the caps make it feel rough sometimes, this mod is very smooth, hawt, and very good spinability, not a very good KT spin sub but a wonderful mod.
I would best compare it's spinability to a triple tipped keityo comssa mod.... -

I have a link to a video tutorial on how to get grips on to pens easier. i used the method for each and every vortex i made, and just about any mod i make now. it probably would have made it ten times easier -

It halfway worked but I still think olive oil works the best, I broke my Miffy pen!! T . T oh wel.. *cries* xD
-
Date: Sat, Oct 11 2008 18:14:20
did you break ur miffy from the method? orrrrr something else?
and sure olive oil will get the grip on, but once its on, the olive oil is still there... it causes messy spinning and what not.... -
Date: Fri, Oct 17 2008 02:00:00
I just run it under warm water and clean it with a paper towel, no more oil =]
& I broke my miffy in a combination of both the method and sloppy cutting with scissors.
And I didnt realize there were haters to this pen, maybe i wont spin it..
BTW
I used J-roller tips, they are lighter than signos and fit just as well, Sanding isnt really needed at all for this mod, just tape and scissors... -

first of all, there are haters of every mod... even the mx...
second of all, if you dont sand or use signos, ur making it wrong... -

..if you just hammer the tip in it works fine, and I the signo tipped one i made was a bit heavy... so i just changed the tips...
-
Date: Fri, Oct 17 2008 03:43:29
This is a reallyx100 good mod.
Making it...getting the grips on is hard, BUT if you use Guitrum's method of getting grips onto thick barrels it helps A LOT. I tried both...without Guitrum's way took me more than 10 minutes to get the grip on. With his method with the inktube took me only a couple of minutes...plus you don't end up with sore fingers...Oh and Guitrum, if you hold onto the grip tightly and use pliers and pull hard, there's no need to bite the inktube to get it out from underneath the grip.
The mod spins really well and if you make it with black and white grips, you'll have a nice spinning effect. However, the mod is lighter than a Dr. KT.
Anyways, great job Guitrum! -

I'm wondering how did you guys remove the marker part from the supertip. What did you guys do?
-
Date: Sat, Oct 18 2008 20:56:00
well, what i did, was i took off the cap and pulled out the felt tip. then i took a large screw and screwed it into the back cap. then i pulled the screw and the backcap came out. then i turned it upside down and the ink cartriage fell out.
there is ur supertip body -

just wait to cut the back off of the miffy/ct/kt sign pen until the rest of the mod is made and then that should extend it -

thx umm... another Q
for step 5, when you're assembling the back g2 part... you're using the G2 clicker parts right? Whats the point of the longer part? Also, am i ssupposed to sand it so it fits inside the tube? Cuz otherwise it wont fit into the top part... which i think is wrong.
and is it just me and my weird signos or is the G2 clicker part too big for the signo tip? -

uhmmm the large clicker piece is cut and put inside the g2 body so that the small clicker piece, when screwed into the tip can fit inside it.
the clicker piece has to have the ridges clipped off and then tape wrapped around that.
read the tutorial really carefully. i have everything outlined in the words and the pictures. -

Yeah, i've read it quite a few times. turns out the tip i thought was a signo wasnt >_<
PS. pouring boiling water on g2 grips makes it easier to manipulate, since i dont want to lose my rsvp barrel =p=p -

no thats not right... i know the colour signos are plastic, but there the black/blue signo 207s have metal tips that are pretty similar to the normal signo.

no, they're definitely metal since i have some... plastic does not conduct heat well, metal does. and metal is heavier.
The tips are very close to signos, but not exactly, so im wondering if i can use them. i'm pretty sure i'll just go ahead with them, but im wondering about guitrum's opinion?
PS. i've seen the plastic tips, and yes, they DO look the same as the metal ones, except ... the'yre not shiny?

You can sub it with anything you want. Just beware that it may alter the tutorial -

Stupid question: Which barrel do I use for the clearbody variation?
-
Date: Fri, Dec 5 2008 12:39:36
you use a hgg barrel.
-
Date: Fri, Dec 5 2008 17:06:22QUOTE (BloorA @ Dec 5 2008, 04:39 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>you use a hgg barrel.
yea you just cut the place where the grip used to be the same length of the end where the back plug was. and make sure you make two of the end "caps" with the backpiece, not the front piece with the threads. -

Erm can I sub the ink with other ink? Like RSVP or w/e?
Cos I don't really like the bic ink. -

well the only reason why i use bic ink is because it fits really well in a miffy body. you could use any ink you want as long as you can get it to fit and stay in and write. -

Supertips are everywhere in the US. Look at the art section of your local Wal-Mart or Target. -
Date: Sat, Feb 14 2009 02:39:00
acctually, the supertip was a sub for the Colortwin or the Miffy body. so finding a sub for a sub would be quite hard.
supertips are very easy to find in america. but if you dont want to use them, then just trade somebody for a Colortwin or a Miffy. -

hey the clearbody variation uses an HGG barrel, is it possible to make it using RSVP? im kinda new to pen spinning and currently have a stylish pirat that i really like but i dun like how the pirat is a marker styled writing so i was thinking of using the RSVP barrel and using the RSVP ink. if anybody could post a way to do it, that would be freaking awesome.
thanks in advance -
Date: Sat, Feb 14 2009 20:53:02
uhmmmm im sure you could, but the threads are really weak so idk how good of a choice it would be. just make it the same way you would with an hgg body.

Wow great mod...I REALLY wanna make one...but can't. I live in Australia and don't have any of them pens that are used for the body/barrel. Anyone recommend any subs for the barrel?

the simplest sub for the body is a crayola supertip. or you could make a clearbody with an hgg body. im sure you could do it with an rsvp body as previously discussed. -

Oh fk! The back of the supertip where the front part of the g2 was supposed to be attached in broke when i tried to get the g2 in... Is filing off the threads on the front part of the g2 recommended?

So is it still possible to make a retractable version following the new tutorial then following the retractable method in the old tutorial?

I have gotten this mod to work with a supertip... sanded down the inside of the g2 and outside of the supertip where they connect and it works fine.
looks sexy when it spins too. did the majority black with 2 red stripes and it's pretty when it spins. It's lighter then most of my mods so I'll be using it to learn tricks. <3 -

But beside this this mod and the tut are very good. In the vid it could be better, when you say / or write one or to descriptions for each picture, othrewise the vid helped me understanding a lot, thx
