i think the iraq war thread should be brought here, so maybe it could go from a flaming war to an actual discussion
EDIT: just read the rules. As a mentioned in the original thread for this section, i don't see why you're limiting topics. Could you explain why exactly we should forbid threads on politics and religion? They seem like perfect serious debate subjects, and I dont see why have this section if we can't use it for that. If anyone starts to flame, you simply delete any agressive posts. I would like to hear both sides to some of these arguements, and if they don't go here, they'll only go to off-topic, and you just can't get a good discussion out of there.
ok, just read the thing zombo posted. but wasn't that supposed to apply to the old upsb? anyways, i think any flaming can be controlled by the moderators on topics like these, and thus there would be no 'straining of upsb relationships'. but, if this is just how we're going to do it, i guess that's fine, and better than nothing... but why is it there were never any rules regarding those topics on the regular off-topic section? i mean, the iraq war topic went through without any trouble. -

because the off-topic section was never meant to be moderated seriously on upsb3...
and now we have this section only that should be moderated,
simple to understand, no? -

okie dokie
how about making a brainstorm pined thread for the section? so that people can check if a certain topic may be too controversial to post or not? -

How about thinking sensibly about the topic before posting and if after it is posted, it really is too controversial, it will be locked by a moderator? -

Sure. It's referring to threads such as "Theism vs. Atheism" or "Democratic vs. Republican" and so on, since people tend to be firmly fixed with respect to their religious and political stances that such debates go nowhere. But worse, from past experience, these conversations usually degenerate into personal attacks. Feel free to make a thread on the Iraq War if you want, but present it from a politically neutral standpoint.
Edit: Oh, and if you're unsure of whether or not a topic is acceptable, you can ask in this thread. -

i was thinking we could clearly itterate in the first post a very strict guideline on how to word posts in order to prevent flaming
kinda like your 'argue the opinion not the poster' rule, i forget how you said it
ok how about
"Sexuality- Nature or Nurture?"
the abortion topic is going good...
Gay Marriage stances?
also i wanted to try a heavy vs light pen thread here... they were all closed in philosophy and stuff because of flaming
thats mainly what i was thinking with the posting guidelines thing, because i really like to hear the points brought up in those topics, and i think we would be able to prevent the flaming here
