UPSB v3

Board Comments / Post count issue

limiting the amount of post count to limit spam

  1. -JC-
    Date: Mon, Jul 21 2008 15:32:25

So lately, there's been the issue of people posting short spammy comments to up their post count. And I admit, I post short spammy comments quite a bit as well. This is especially an issue in the show off your pens thread, and to a lesser extent, the show off your combos thread. Both threads allow users to just say "NICE PEN" or "that's an awesomeee comboo". It's much more of an issue in the show off your pens thread simply because the amount of pens that people get and want to show other people >.<...

So this idea may not get rid of all the spam that people make in those two threads, and other similar threads, but hopefully it'll lessen it a bit.

Basically, the idea is to only increase a user's post count by +1 for every post that they make (except for in the members intro, off topic, spammers bin, etc...) in the forums that is greater than...say... 15 words? 20 words?

And so while this still may end up with a bunch of people saying, "amazingggg pennsss 0.0...", it may discourage many who post comments like that just to up their post count since comments like that are short and quick.

This is used in some websites like www.asianeu.net (or something like that?) where you get to download asian movies and tv series episodes for free, but in order to enter the sub forum where you can download it, you must have 20 posts. And so I was spamming away for my dad who wanted to watch it but didn't know how to post (xDD ) until i realized that my post count wasn't increasing >.< and so I ended up posting slightly thought about comments instead of useless spam in the movie/episode discussion forum (you couldn't watch anything here, but you can just post -.-'' ) -----my dad was getting kinda impatient about this, but w/e, there was no other way to up my post count unless i actually thought about it and wrote up sentences that were 15-25 words long.

So administrators and mods, please consider installing such a feature onto this forum as well. If the board can automatically give a post count to a user for every post >15-25 words, then I think that spam could be reduced =\. I'm not 100% if this'll work, but I'm just proposing an idea here.
--doesn't have to be 15, 20, or 25 words----you can decide the number by yourself, i'm just giving an example.

    Thanks for reading.

well, i mentioned show off your pens thread because the issue is most noticeable there, but i want this to apply everywhere on the board =\
like when a person posts a new insert, or new tutorial, people tend to just post, "great insert" or "oh wow, nice mod, i might try this" which doesn't contribute to that thread at all and also the whole IB4L thing back then
or in trade threads, where people just go "PMed you"

Agreed. JC, you're one of the biggest spammers on this board.
As for nulling all posts in the Show Off Thread, I think that'd be best.
The thread is called "Show off your Pens" not "Bring Up My Post Count".

What you are actually looking for here is the reputation system that was supposed to be implemented with UPSB. Members can't complain if their peers find their posts useless but as soon as you forbid spam as a rule then people whine about the suppression of free speech. The usefulness of a post is not determined by its length but by its content.

Isnt the reason post count was removed from under your name when upsb opened was to stop spam?
Post count should no longer exist

we still need post count for poll voting, team creation and custom ranking

How about a karma system on USPB? Is it a possibility? Has this been dicussed?

  18. Zombo
    Date: Mon, Jul 21 2008 20:15:22

    karma = reputation.

we tried one but it didnt work, as in the system wouldn't install correctly.

and we already have member star rating

Then there should be a cap on the posts so when you "unlock" everything it no longer keeps track of your posts.

i doubt spammers continue to spam after they've unlocked everything....

  21. minche
    Date: Mon, Jul 21 2008 20:24:18

why not combine rating and that spam control? like, you can't post posts with less that 15 (or w/e) words if you have rating 3 stars or less
    :/

  22. -JC-
    Date: Mon, Jul 21 2008 20:39:23

i dont' think that the rating system is good for determining who makes good posts or not
for example, (no offense, but its' kinda true -.-'' ), imatt make great lengthy posts but there are plenty of people that are upset with it who can't handle criticisms well and rate him poorly, and so he ends up only having 3 stars when he deserves 5 when you look at the well thought out posts he makes
so people may hate him and be biased against him because of their personal experience with him, and that leads to him having a mediocre rating =\

  23. Shadowserpant
    Date: Mon, Jul 21 2008 23:37:22

i think the star system's kinda iffy...

how about like youtube where people can put like "mark this post as spam" and then it wont count?
the thing is, there're way too many threads where people do this
    the whole philosophy section really

lol i never posted in there once

    whats a karma system?

how about to make things easier.. why don't we just remove the custom title feature? AFAK, people don't spam to vote or create a team. But they do spam to get the custom title. So why don't we just get rid off it? (the mods/admins can still have their custom title if they want. eg "MODERATOR OF DOOM!!!"

Another option is to lower the post count needed to get custom title. if you need 150 post, people won't spam as much after they get their custom title because they don't achieve anything else by spamming. (you can't do much if someone spams for the fun of spamming)

    OR..

if a member gets 501 post, you mods/admins can decide if they can have a custom title.

i just think its a good idea to do something about the custom title to reduce spamming. I personally think main reason people spam is because they want to get the custom title. but after you get the title.. its just.. meh;; nothing special about it.

i have custom title...and i still spam xDD
i dont' even post spam to get my custom title..i just post it when i feel like it xDD

but i dunno, that could be true for the majority of the board =\ (that people'll calm down their spamming if they get their custom title or if custom titles are eliminated overall)

  28. WhiteFang
    Date: Tue, Jul 22 2008 14:12:57

well.. after 501 post, post counts don't even matter does it? if people spam not for post counts.. then like i said. that can't be stopped. if you spam and don't care about post counts, whats having your idea going to change anything? people will spam the same way.

  29. -JC-
    Date: Tue, Jul 22 2008 14:14:57

well, no, that's just me, i'm just different from most people who spam for post counts xDD
but then i suppose you're right in your proposal
hmm.... admins/mods take both things into consideration? (my idea/whitefang's ideas)

  33. writenamehere

I like the mod approval idea because once you have 501 posts, the mods will probably have seen enough of your posts to be able to tell if you spam a lot, and if you dont then you get the custom title.

  34. Shadowserpant
    Date: Tue, Jul 22 2008 22:09:52

yea so the mods can just deny the title to those that have spammed alot

  35. Mats
    Date: Wed, Jul 23 2008 00:20:27

Extra workload on moderators though =/

I don't think the star system is really that good. I see people who are good on the forums with low ratings. I don't think people really care too much about that system for the most part and I doubt it could be used in any way to replace post count for doing things (such as voting in polls etc).

Perhaps the best way to reduce spam is to be harsher on repeat spammers in terms of punishment?

i liked the idea of low amount of posts getting you to personal text thingy.

or mabe have it time based? cuz it makes no sense when it said that i was an 'old timer' when i was on the board for about 2 months..

  37. Rorix
    Date: Wed, Jul 23 2008 03:34:41

If people had to get 501 posts before they even got a chance at custom title, they would probably spam up anyway. Only admins can change custom title rights (I think) so the workload would mostly be on Zombo.

I would prefer a public request thread, that way people who spam wouldn't want to request it if they know they don't deserve it. And have some requirements to fulfill beforehand.

get the title, which gives you super powers and allows you to rule to forums, amirite?

The whole point of custom titles is not really a show of respect or a sign you've been posting a lot, but just a custom title. Basically, somebody joins UPSB, are inactive for 6 months, get custom title, and then what.

if people are willing to join upsb, then wait 6 months for a custom title, then begin posting, then more power to them
