Damn man. Those are the cleanest cuts I have ever seen! Whats your secret?!

first, i jam the grips tightly onto the back end of a Non-Retractable Profile Stick Pen Thingy. this way, the grip has no where to move. i then take my "modified" x-acto knife blade (the tip is just broken off and it's kind of dull) and start cutting. in order to make a clean, straight cut, i roll the grip along the table/desk/working surface, keeping the blade stationary. eventually, i cut all the way through. if i mess up for any reason, usually i can fix it with a new, really really sharp x-acto blade, which sinks through the grip like... yeah, you know what i mean.

and K4S, i think the"blip" you see is from not pushing the grips on evenly, i wasn't being careful.

cutting the sailor gels was a nightmare... i messed up so many segments... anyone have a good method for cutting them?

I split off Dr1v37h38u5's reply since it will make a nice thread for further cutting tips.

For Profile grips, I do something similar to Dr1v37h38u5. I do cut the grip while it is around a pen, but I just leave the grip on the original Profile pen. I turn both the pen and the x-acto knife when cutting around the barrel, I get fairly straight cuts almost all of the time. I try to use a sharp blade right from the start.

For sailors, I cut with normal scissors first, then I use those small manicure scissors to get rid of the flat parts on the grip and even it out.

Try putting a thick piece of masking tape on the parts you dont want to cut.

I kind of "roll" my knife over the grip, wich is on a ballsign body or just where it originally was, while I also move the pen step by step.

I take the grips off the pens when i cut them and i would like to think i get clean cuts. The trick is to use a small blade...i always get better cuts using a smaller blade then when i originally tried cutting them with a large one. Also scissors are a no-no nono.gif

I keep the grip on the pen, put my xacto on the grip where i want to cut it, and roll the pen while putting pressure on the blade. if its a tight grip it works great, but if its a loose one you might end up going crooked or something. It takes a steady hand but its easy!

get a friend to stretch the grip (pull left and pull right and hold it) then just get scissors and cut it.

    (for papermate profiles)

    MAN !!!
    These tips are TIMESAVERS !!!
I used the one where you just put the grip
around a spare BIC-like cap, and just pressure cut
(not continuous) with a warehouse razor (boxcutter).

No. Using scissors to cut grips is the worst idea ever. I could get a better cut grip blindfolded than you will with scissors.

    erm.. yeah.

scissors don't do a good job for cutting grips. unless you're gonna stuff them into a comssa cap or something....

the reason i stretch the grip over a wider pen is to put tension on the grip.

this way, the grip doesn't shift while i'm cutting it, reducing the chances for a bad cut.

ususally, i cut the grips well, but there's always the natural mistake factor, which comes from being a human.

This is a tutorial on how to make clean cuts. Its very very simple once u understand how it is done.

    Materials needed:
1 x Fake carabina (non climbing)
    1 x Hacksaw
    1 x File
    1 x Sharp penknife (X-Acto recommended)
    1 x Steady left hand
    1 x Steady right hand
    2 x Eyes
1 x Brain (MUST BE WORKING!!!)
    1 x Grip
    ??? x Moneys
Okay to get on with the real thing:

    Step 1:
    Buy a fake carabina

    Step 2:
Use a hacksaw and cut off everything other than the flat part and sand the edges smooth

    Step 3:
Put the grip over the carabina section

    Step 4 (important):
Use your brain and plan the cutting.

    Step 5:
Hold the carabina section with your left hand

    Step 6:
Hold the penkife with your right hand

    Step 7:
Cut the grip with smooth strokes

    ANY QUESTIONS?!?

You can do this just as well by cutting the grip while it's on the original pen, or on the barrel of an unusable pen. This should just be a part of "Quick mod questions" :/

    Date: Sun, Mar 2 2008 15:53:48

Well between this method and using the original barrel is the grip stretches over a square object rather than a round one, making it easier to cut. Tho I think cutting a carabiner is a waste because you can easily find another object that will function the same way.

If you lay it out flat, and use a razor blade, it works pretty damn fine...

all i do to cut grips is to find some random fat thing stick it on
find some sharp thing and pressure cut:)

o.o hey thats what I did for my ayatori mod designs. Try to go for lines, curves are hard to cut.

For me i stretched out the sailor gels with a needle nosed pliers, pushed it down on the desk then pushed a razor over the segments i wanted. i got a pretty clean cut

I havent done any grip cutting for any ayatori yet, but ive been thinking about it. if you put the grip on a pencil or some thick rod and then rolled it on a table while the xacto is cutting it, would that make it pretty clean? or is that just a bad idea...

  27. iNoob
    Date: Thu, Mar 6 2008 10:56:45

it works, but u can only use it for straight cuts across the barrel, not along the barrel

  28. Guitrum
    Date: Thu, Mar 6 2008 14:07:48

Well if i wanted to do a spiral cut, i would just roll it with the xacto at an angle and let it cut up the grip

    doesn't work for curves

If you use an old pen that tapers down, there is a place on it where pretty much any grip will fit snugly. to cut the grip, I use an x-acto blade. Mine is curved inward, but this is not necessary, it just makes it a lot easier. one really cool tip for cutting dr. grips is to take the metal ring behind the grip, slide it over the grip, and put it on a pen that is thick enough to hold the metal ring snugly around the grip. this makes cutting very easy. Any metal ring works for this, or even a piece of wire or something, the dr.grip ring is what I use.
Another thing, if you find the x-acto knives too dangerous, or feel that you cant cut the grip straight, another thing you can do is use one of those big black utility clips, the triangular things with silver handles, and pinch it down on the grip where you want to cut it, making sure the grip is level in the clip. you then can use a pair of scissors or knife against the metal clip.

grip cutting isnt a problem. it's getting the grip off of the pen that is troublesome
    any help with that?

Probably the wrong thread to ask in. You should use quick modification questions. Most common solutions are, dip the grip in some boiling water, or break the plastic under the grip.

Apply pressure with your sharp object along the edges of the cut, then dig it in at an angle and use it like a lever to lift up a small bit of grip, then work your way to sort of peeling the excess grip off along the cuts (assuming that they're deep enough)

I cut sailors by using a sharp piece of metal blade thingy and push it down very hard on the place you want to cut.
