Abstract: To determine the best way to teach the thumbaround

Ok, this is the thread where we discuss the best possible ways to teach non-PSers how to do the TA. You can post how you have taught people in the past, what works, what doesnt work, or what you think might work. Heres the technique that I've been using, and it seems to work for people.

TEACHING METHODS

Snap Method:
First I show them how to hold the pen (Thumb in between index and middle fingers, on the opposite side of the pen.)

I then tell them how to do the push. The best way I can relate this information to them is to tell them to simply snap. You use your middle finger in the same motion you use to snap, only with less force.

Once I see that they have the push and the spin down, they have to learn to catch it. This is the hardest part of teaching the Thumbaround. What I usually do is tell them to open up their hand more while the pen is spinning. That way there is a bigger "Landing Zone" for the pen to fall into when trying to catch it.

Index Release Method
I start by doing the same hold that you teach. (See Snap Method)

Then I teach them to apply pressure (not too hard) to all three fingers.

After, I tell them to Pull away the index finger and magically the spin is initiated.

As for the catch, I tell them to pinch their fingers to stop the rotation.

HELPFUL TIPS

*hold the pen on the end

PEN IDEAS:

* I actually prefer using a certain pen. I choose a pen that has a distinct marking wherever they should put their fingers (my mx has just what i need)
that way they get the feel for where their fingers ought to go. i like it

* Use your judgement on what pen would be good for learning.

NOTE: Use classmates as guine pigs. If anyone expresses ANY interest, try to teach them the trick. Think of new ways to do it, and then bring your research back here biggrin.gif
