Philosophy / Audience in a Live Tournament

This is probably a bit hypothetical, since most of you will probably never attend a live tournament, but how do you think the crowd should react in real-life while watching a competition.

Should it be like Golf, where you have to remain totally silent while the player executes his shot.
Should it be like Tennis, where you have to be mostly silent, unless something crazy happens on the field and audience usually react a little bit.
Should it be like pretty much anything else, where the crowd is free to talk, yell, cheer, etc.

And finally, do you think spinners are affected by the crowd? Will they spin better if the crowd is silent/loud, etc.

I think it should be like tennis. Something like football would be too hectic, tennis style gives a slight boost in cofidence, and if it were like golf, then too many people would be kicked out. This is just my opinion.

Definitely the middle option. It's important to concentrate, but the audience has to be able to exlaim their wonder as you perform a flawless bakfall harmonic... twice... O.O

    EDIT: 50th post, woohoo! biggrin.gif

Like Tennis probably...but when you drop the audience could laugh all crazy lol.

I think it should be like tennis happy.gif
I wouldn't want people to boo me when I do something bad, but if I manage to pull off a nice trick here and there, I'd like to know that I'm actually doing alright and not overestimating myself---so i'd like a little bit of cheering here and there i suppose.
Absolute silence is kinda annoying =\, i have no idea how I'm doing and sometimes i feel like i'm doing really well, but nobody's saying anything so i can't confirm that
I wouldn't want it too noisy cause i'd just get distracted =\
--some people get distracted REALLY easily, so if one of the spinners is like that, he/she'll be at a disadvantage -.-''

i think if it's like super quiet it's like all weird and omg everyone's watching me... *messes up*
i think hectic is better, kinda like a dance off
since i consider psing to be a lot like dancing. The crowd could be all loud and go OOOOOOHHH when they do something cool, and it urges the spinner on

i think this is correct because don't forget spinners are usually spinning over music even in live tournaments so there's already sound in the background.

I think the crowd should show some approval for the spinners to encourage them to continue spinning whereas if it's completely silent, the spinner(s) will get nervous and drop the pen [EDIT: as shadowserpent mentioned]
If people talk are allowed to talk, people will most likely go like "Do a [some trick]!" or like "Don't mess up! Don't mess up!" and will most likely cause the spinner(s) to mess up [Quite Ironic]

wheres the 'doesn't matter' choice tongue.gif it doesn't really matter because in the live tournament if theres too many people you can just listen to your mp3 player while spinning.

hmm after I watched the PDS tourney, hm probably it's like..the audience will be like whoa....then after you finish your combo they would clap, or it depends. If the audience is really crazy like fuck, it might be somehow like wrestling like.."Do cont mid bak!" *clap clap clap clap clap* or if you drop the pen, "booo...loser..loser.." but I think
the audience will just be quiet and maybe some would be cheering, but after the combo, everyone claps.

At the German Gathering, it was like Tennis, it's usually quiet [aside from the background music], but when you do an extremely long combo without dropping or a couple of hard linkages/tricks/conts after each other, the crowd goes all like: WOOOOOOOOOH! That's what makes you even more motivated to spin better, so I liked it. =)

The crowd is the moodmaker in the battles, if they are pleased, you know you're doing well. If they don't seem pleased, you know you have to try harder, and probably fail doing that, which will make you even more nervous.

In the FPSB meeting, it was like the second option ^^, some people speak when the pen fail or when we did a nice trick. But you are more nervous when all people don't speak and watch only you ><

I still remember, at the DE Gather the crowd was usually silent (it was totally quiet when f.e. the music lagged), but it also happend, that when minwoo made his palmspin 10.5 the crowd was all like "OMG OMG WTF" Oo

But overalll talking and backround noise would be too much, even though i was talking a lot to the other judges .-.

you're supposed to listen to the music which is playing for everybody and someone is supposed to tell you when time is up.

You have to let the crowd get involved otherwise it's gay to watch. The crowd shouldn't be talking amongst themselves however.

I think the crowd will have the same effect as in any other sport, when they cheer they will push the spinner on, when they are quiet the spinner will wonder what is wrong and feel slightly worse.

I think we would have to have people going all out for a live tourney. But we may have to get someone drunk first. Any takers?

What should be done is to have an official commenter who would comment the spin, and underline when some special tricks are done.

Edit: a partial commenter could infuence the judges, however.

...that has nothing to do with how the crowd is reacting, that's adding another person doing another kind of work.

And my oppinion is that tennis-attitude should be adopted.

i like the tennis style audience....
enough applause to motivate the spinner....
but not too much to distract/piss off the spinner.... happy.gif

I think you should be able to choose if you can listen to music or not. there might be a song that you spin better when listening to. Someone can just tap you if the time is up.

Im also for music, but you should have the chance to choose one.

Getting a random song would be very unfair.
Especially if one gets a relaxing song he already knows and the other a very hectic song he never heard before.

why does that matter, you pick the song you want, and they play it for everyone in the room. doesn't have to be only you listening to it on your earphones.

Music should be a must, I was talking to some people about a swespin tourney and they didn't think we should have any music playing. Anyway, apart from music of the spinners choice playing in the background, I think the audience should be allowed to react and say quick words, though not constantly cheer or have long conversations about off-topic subjects.

But if there were live tournaments, you'd probably have to memorize your combo unless you're freestyling, right? But if you were given the option to choose your own music....it would be possible to cheat by putting something on your own music device that tells you what tricks to do and whatnot.

How is that a help in anyway? I dont think that is counted as cheating anyway. You could mind as well just write breakdowns on your arm...
