Philosophy / PS in Olympics!

What if PS was in olympics....Could it ever go in? If so would people consider it cool or lame? Drop in your opinion..

It would be just another domain for the Korean or China to get a gold medal

  3. Loanshark

Table tennis (the euphamistic word for ping-pong) is an Olympic event....why not pen spinning?

  4. CPC
    Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 13:24:21

Yes I think that it is possible but I doubt that it will happen anytime soon with so many established sports unable to get in even though they have groups set up trying to get them in.
I think that it will be cool to spinners and more people but I'm sure some people will think that it is lame.

Imagine the type of specially made pens that would be developed for spinning if this was an olympic sport.

    LOL, thats hard.
Many sports require much physical exhaustion like swimming, soccer, hockey even weightlifting
Some like shooting, archery require some too
But penspinning though attention-grabbing only involves movements of hands

if tha formal horse-riding thingy can be one
    y not penspinning?

  7. writenamehere
    Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 14:45:28

not gonna happen. There are table tennis academies all over the world and many live tournaments held and is a lot more popular than most think. And horse racing has been going on for hundreds of years. cant say the same for psing

That would be pretty cool if it was in but I highly doubt that its gonna happen. Its not popular enough and it won't be for quite a while if at all.
It would be pretty cool though if they have different events like number of finger passes in a minute or how many bakfalls you can do without dropping your pen and stuff like that.

  10. jaychou
    Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 18:31:14

heh even though in theory its enough of a spectator sport and has all the technicalities and judging of an olympic sport, all the sports in the olympics require strenuous activity.

  11. Krasnal
    Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 19:13:19

It would lose enjoyment, because judging is subjective thing, and if it would be on Olympics, judges would have to give points for that, define difficulty of tricks.

it will never be an olympic sport, just because its not a sport.
    its just a hobby imo.

  13. DeadMyth
    Date: Wed, Aug 13 2008 23:38:30

Hm, from my point of view, there would be too much ppl spinning for fame and medals rather than the "spirit" that hobby-spinners have.

It would become an excuse to increase the price of pens used for mods.

  14. Zombo
    Date: Thu, Aug 14 2008 05:10:45

its possible, but you would need some good rules to make it work which will make it diverge from real pen spinning.

it's like "olympic judo" and judo, the martial art itself.

If penspinning gets into the olympics, next thing you know speed cubing is an event too.

  17. Mightyboy

Well in my opinion, before psing is able to get into the olympics, it must 1st be able to get in some "smaller" games. Like SEAgames, Asian games etc. Olympic is too big a thing for psing as of now. It is not THAT popular yet.

  18. Krasnal

yea.. live battles would be bad..it should be a little different from the PS we do and i guess table tennis and horse riding are more popular and considered as proper sports thats why they are in...

hey guys, i was thinking that we can actually hold an olympics for manupilative arts. If we got all the people who do manupilative arts... : such as: pen spinning, poi, glowstringing, speed cubing, hacky sacking?. etc etc. and split all the people into their own countries... i think it might work?

there was a ps olympics on ucpsb.... in 2006

and i don't think it will be an olympic sport anytime soon, but it could be possible in the future if the penspinning world will become more famous than ever tongue.gif ph34r.gif

That would be really cool. It would be fun to watch and stuff but i don't think it would happen too soon and live events for some of these things wouldn't be too good. People want to see a clean/perfected presentation rather than watch you practice.

Dude Olympics and X- Games are too much for pen spinning. Its not that great that it could get in big leagues like that. no1 would wanna watch 2 guys spin live. It would bore lots of people cuz they just see a pen spin on all fingers. They wont kno what we're doin. it would be lame for the rest of the world.

Well.... I don't think we'll see PS in the olympics... maybe in the far future, but not now.
to be honest, I think PS should kinda stay as a hobby- like thing. I mean, Live tournaments would be awesome things, and I wish we could have international live tournaments one day. or at least small ones for now... and of course online tournaments like now...
But it just won't fit the olympics IMO....
I hope you understood my thoughts, kinda hard for me to try and express it in English >_<"

In the near future, no........further too not many chances. Well I asked a lot of people...they laugh and then they go "oh, you were serious!!Welll then, I think no way!"
I dont think PS is or will be that big to get into Olympics. If PSers increase by a lot in the coming years and it becomes an "almost" world known sport/hobby, then it "may" get in..

    PS in olympics? Cool..

    Commentator for Pen Spinning category:

Oh look! It's Eriror and KTH going head to head... LIVE!

I heard they were battling together last time during the world tornament but now we see them again. Who will get the gold.. who will get silver..

Oh no! A pen has dropped and the crowd goes wild for the other spinner..

Both of them are so fast I can't really see what they're doing but I think those judges and their proffesional eyes can see what's going on!

    *Moves to interview Judge*

Commentator: So who do you think is gonna win
Judge: Can't see a thing really, I'll just go for whoever's the fastest

    Commentator:

Well, there you have it, straight from the best judge himself!

Those were nice freestyles men.. now.. what are the names of the pen mods they're using again?

    Lololololol...

We rarely ever win Olympic baseball. Only A-AAA players play in the Olympics, that's why we never win.

    Not a chance.

There'd be far too many rules and far too many competitors.

More than likely if it did theoretically happen, it would be judged like any other competitive event. A designated trick-set that must be fufilled within a combo
You need to have a 10 judge system or something.
    Each one juding
    1.) Smoothness
    2.) Arounds
    3.) Aerials
    4.) Stalls
    5.) Passes
    6.) Difficulty
    ...etc etc..

The other part would be, in order to make it an even playing field, There would have to be DESIGNATED pens a person uses. Length depending on the size of the hand. Then there would be banned mods and all pens had to be inspected to exact detail to show for no modification.

all in all its just a large fricken hassle

  40. Zombo
    Date: Thu, Aug 21 2008 16:53:17

    i think its more like

spinners have to hand in their breakdown beforehand, and it gets attributed a degree for difficulty and originiality.

then the spinner tries to execute combo

the "A" judges decide whether or not the degree of difficulty was valid (breakdown respected and any original element really original) or it must be reduced.

the "B" judges evaluate execution, smoothness, etc. and give grade on 10.

Add two together, just like in gymnastics.

Isn't that how they do diving? Because I was watching it the other day and the announcers knew what the athletes were going to do even before they stepped onto the diving platform.

  42. Zombo
    Date: Thu, Aug 21 2008 17:24:38

yes, but in diving the execution is multiplied by the degree, not added like in gym

  43. minche
    Date: Fri, Aug 22 2008 20:20:25

PS in Olymipics?! not gonna happen

maybe if they all had the same combo, or ,as zombo said, to hand combos beforehand and maybe to do judge's combo. like you get one handed to them and one they tell you to do (maybe that one could be the same for all) and that would be like freestyle smile.gif

they shouldnt do it live probably..they should give in the videos and show it on t.v. or something. And hey should announce the winner in the stadium showing all his videos..(just an idea).. It wouldnt get in anyway..as much as i know there are far more better sports people consider to be in the olympics rather than penspinning, yet it would be really nice.

Are there specified judges? As in, are all judges for all games in the Olympics the same? I don't know much about this but I guess the judges should be pretty experienced with PS if PS were to be one of the Games so judges from WT and WC would be used if there's PS in Olympics.
