I'm planning to buy a video camera for a trip to europe this winter. As an added bonus, I'll probably use the cam to record some pen spinning combos. I'm curious to know... What does everyone use?
-
Date: Mon, Sep 24 2007 22:20:58
I have a Nikon Coolpix 3100. I highly suggest that you not use it. It sucks.
-

Dont get a Sony Cybershot.
-

i use canon zr500, i did a lot of research on it before i bought it (it was right before my trip to europe as well)
so far i am very satisfied with it. the price has probably came down since i bought it (i got it for about $225). only problem is it didn't come with a fire wire cable. but i got that off ebay for $4. hope this helps. -

I use a Canon A620...its a little outdated but it records at 30fps which is better than a lot of other cameras.
-

Quoted for great justice.
This camera is horrid in taking video. I have the 6.0 MP one and it constantly auto-focuses as you're filming. Don't buy it for the video.
I use a Logitech Quickcam IM for filming and it's pretty good. It also records 30 FPS and with the proper lighting, you can achieve good results. -

Olympus SP-320 it's a bit old but very good cam, 30 FPS in 640x480,
but they discontinued production of this model... -

I have the Lumix DMC-LZ5 and well, I was trying to run some video I filmed in my laptop, the video, it was kinda laggy.. But other days it works kinda well, quality is decent.

I'll say it again, used PS2 EyeToy. 640x480 30FPS. I got mine for $5 USD.
Half of the old black ones use Logitech technology, the others are Nagai(Mine) and its crystal clear. -
Date: Tue, Sep 25 2007 21:26:07
HP Photosmart R707
I recommend this camera. I shoot 5MP video at 30fps. No tripod/anchoring system, thus it is a pain in the ass to set up a good angle. If you have the patience though, this shoots quality video -

Wow thanks for this btw. I tested out my friend's eyetoy and I ended up buying it off him for like 7 bucks( I bought him lunch at chickfila lol). I'll probably end up using my old digicam for my trip but wow this shit was a steal.
Anyhow, I'm sure I'm not the only one that needed camera recommendation... So keep on posting folks -

1. Never buy a digital camera to record video.
2. Buy your camcorder from Costco because they have an excellent return policy. You can usually return it within a year, no questions asked, as long as you didn't break the camcorder yourself.
3. Do your research. A mini-DV or hard drive camcorder is good. Don't get a Sony one that uses a proprietary format like Hi8 tapes. I believe I had a Canon ZR700, which was decent. It's what I used to film z-bo (search "Life of an Admin" on YouTube).
4. If it's mini-DV, you'll probably need a Firewire card to transfer video to your desktop (not sure about laptops). If you're not satisfied with the stock battery, you may feel like buying an upgrade. These things factor into the cost. It really depends how much you're willing to spend and what your needs are. -

I use a Quickcam messenger.
Sometimes, the program you use is just as important as the camera.
After switching my recording program (into a version that was much older) I managed to double my FPS.
Use the Quickcam software, but try to get a version below 10. -

I've been playing with my iSight camera (MacBook Pro here), and thought it would be awful for video since it takes terrible pictures. Any motion is always blurred in the pictures, so I assumed fps would be abysmal.
But when I got QuickTime Pro, I tried making a few videos and it isn't so bad. Not ideal, but it takes decent video.
Of course, the camera is mounted at the top of the screen, so getting a good view of a place I'm comfortable spinning is pretty tough, but once I position the laptop it works out pretty well.
Sorry if this isn't too helpful for prospective camera buyers, I know you're not all about to run out and spend 2k on a computer just for an acceptable camera. But if anyone here has an iSight already, then give it a go. -

Does anyone actually use a video camera to record pen spinning related stuff? Im guessing the majority of people here use digital cameras or webcams. And is there any benefit to using an actual video recorder? I can already record at 30fps with my digicam which is plenty. The only benefit i can see is better resolution but youtube and other video streaming sites will butcher all that to hell anyway.
-

Yeah, I did. My first videos were from my Sony camcorder. It was a huge pain in the ass. Record to video, covert... Stream directly = crap quality.

Yes, but wouldnt youtube/putfile/etc completely ruin the quality? -
Date: Tue, Oct 2 2007 05:05:19
You guys should really try uploading to Stage6 sometime. It's the video hosting site by DivX and the quality isn't bad. The only bad part is that you have to encode to DivX (Is that really the bad part?). I also hear that Veoh is good but I guess it depends on preference. YouTube/Putfile lowers the video quality a lot while Stage6 allows huge video files to be hosted and the quality isn't really lost at all.

When you plug it in it'll ask for drivers, google for them.
Then use a capture program like nero or MPC to record.QUOTE (BananaKetchup @ Oct 6 2007, 10:29 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>My nagai eyetoy is quite bluury and it lags a bit.

1000 fps is shot with high-speed cameras Now if only they show pen tricks with high-speed cameras in slow-mo, then it'll be easier to learn tricks XD

Lol, thumbarounds are easy to catch spinning at the naked eye, but fast tricks like the sonics and etc... aren't so easy to catch spinning at the naked eye, in 30fps it may spin a little slower but some people might not understand how it's spinning =| Toke me awhile to understand it XD Anybody know any other videos of pen spinning tricks filmed at 1000fps? -

They record pretty high quality unless the digital camera really sucks. The drawback is that digital cameras run out of power faster than camcorders, so if you take a huge amount of time to film a combo, you probably need lots of spare batteries/rechargeables.

It doesn't mean it'll do 30fps at it's highest resolution. My brother has one, it only goes up to 640x480 @ 30fps, frame rate decrease if you go higher. -

if the camcorder connects to your computer via USB, you can get some dropped frames. if you get one it is probably best to connect with firewire.

That way, you can pretty much get alot of different angles.
o,tripod,thx a lot ^ ^
is there any type you all would recommand, cuz i'm not good at these problems..
so the camera will be on the tripod and the tripod will be on my desk is it?
and also are different cameras only match to their own brand of tripod or sth? -

There's a good tripod out there called a gorillapod *google that* sticks to any round or corner surface.

I mainly use my cell phone camera (cause i could take it with me wherever i go and film wherever i want) but to be honest, the real reason is that my parents are against me penspinning so they hid all the cameras away from me
thats why its rare if you see my combos in high quality, all i could do is apologize for the poor quality T_T
