uhm, when your just starting to cut grips, i wouldnt try any of the hard stuff yet. just do simple straight lines and keep it simple. then when you get the hang of it, you can do like all those crazy flame designs and stuff. im still cutting just straight lines, and ive done like 4 or 5.

and dont use a knife, try an xacto knife, the handle makes it easier to control. look at the ayatori mod thread for -jc-s tut on how to cut grips.

So this is kind of like a Show Off Your Grip Cuts thread. It may still fall under the category of Show Off You Pens but I could be wrong.

I suck at grip cutting normaly. But still havn't tried an ayatori.

Why do people cut grips in those patterns? Is it just for aesthetic appeal? Because IMO plenty of mods look better with uncut grips. huh.gif Not bashing it or anything, just curious.

I agree completely. The pen just looks so much more like a pen with minimal weird customization. Grip colours and inserts is enough for me.

I think it's mostly an aesthetic thing, but it might help with the gripping for infinities and what not.

a matter of taste, however i like the idea because it's innovative (we didn't have that before).

actually, i was listening to eso (i think?) say how ayatori came up with the grip cutting idea to discourage infinities and do more twisted sonic based tricks

I put it on a bigger barrel, so that in case i cut the grip too thin... and it doesn't snap on the bigger barrel, then i know it won't snap on a smaller barrel
i usually use a g2 barrel since it's fairly big and is cylindrical, you can probably also use a rsvp barrel

    its funny...
some people hate them and dont think they look good at all...

Thanks Darren. I just cut my second grip this morning before I went to school. Slightly better.

    I don't have an x-acto knife either.
I use a jack-knife. Those for jungle survival. I use a small one with a sharp tip. Don't use blades with a huge end like a swiss army knife or something. They're hard to get into those hard to reach areas. A pen knife would be good too.

Just put the grip over an unwanted barrel and cut. Doesn't matter if you cut into the barrel. It's unwanted after all.

How do you smoothen out the rough edges of the grip? You can't use sandpaper can you?

  43. DarreN

nice one glamouraz but about the rough edges u can slight trim them off wif ur pen knife or cut a new piece of grip lol dry.gif

    QUOTE (From -JC-)
because of some people's inability to cut a grip -.-'' i'll post a small tut for that

    1. get some sort of gel inked pen, preferably white (like white hgg or white signos )
    2. put the grip that you want to cut over a larger barrel (it should be somewhat difficult to get on, but this is good, you want to stretch the grip out a bit mroe than needed) --(my recommendation is use a G2 barrel that you dont' need )
    3. after you have the grip over the g2 barrel, or whatever other cylindrical barrel you end up using, draw the design that you want onto the grip with the gel ink (any mistakes you make with the drawing can be just rubbed off since it's gel ink)
    4. get some sort of blade, preferably with a handle just cause it's going to be a fairly long process and your hand's gonna get tired faster if there's no handle 5. then press down onto the grip where the line you just drew is... after you push down, DO NOT SLIDE THE BLADE, lift the blade up, and carefully place the blade down for the next cut, and then push back down...and then lift the blade up again, and then push down again --- etc... ----do this until your design is cut out and then just peel the cut out grip away with your fingers
    6. slide the grip off the g2 barrel and you're done.

    Any Cutting tips?

i always manage to over-lap with my corner cuts, and it looks like shit, or rips, when i stick the grip on.
Any ideas for what to cut on either?
Directly on the original pen? on a bic?

and lastly, how do you cut so that the pen doesnt slip?!?!?!
i always find that when putting pressure on the xacto knife on a round barrel makes it slip and cut down the sides... Ruining my grip.
Do you guys cut fairly lightly?? Do i even have to put thta much pressure. (i can use a brand new xacto knife with new blades)

  71. Glamouraz
    Date: Tue, Nov 4 2008 18:46:21

Put the grips on a G2 barrel.

About cutting, I'm not so sure.

Sometimes i apply too much pressure and my blade slips too.

JC said to press your blade onto the grip, lift up, and press again on another area you wanna cut.

Waterfall said to slide the blade.

I slide the blade but sometimes my blade slips too.

Using JC's method only gets the grips cut in certain areas.

I'm not sure though but waterfall did a very clean cut by sliding.. and JC has good cuts too.

Oh and just to make sure you're not alone, cutting grips can be time consuming.

use the little bumps on the grips to act as a guide...then you can draw the same design almost exactly twice. This works well for simpler designs, but probably not really complicated ones (unless you're great at drawing)

For my cuts, I use a pen to draw designs onto the grip then I use a razor blade to cut it >_> Rather than just slicing it all the way through, I watch where the blade goes carefully so it follows the design more accurately before applying more pressure (finalizing the cut). Also watch the edges of the blade, it might make undesirable cuts that ruin your hard work sad.gif

Thanks, it took like 10-15mins would of taken more if i had to draw out the design but like i said i kinda suck at that, so i used one of teks. it isn't the exact same casue i couldnt see all the angles. and yea, people should be posting more grip cuts smile.gif i would but i dont have that many grips good for cutting, i found that one in my bro's bag. Bad thing is i dont have a pen to use this (possibly my best grip cut ever) on, selling my ayatori =(, I'll find something tho

You could stick teh grip on a marker and wave it around like a magic wand rolleyes.gif But yeah, you've got great stuff, man lol Do some trading for more grips ssst.gif That is, if you want to cut more tongue.gif
