    concentrate on keeping it straight
rather than trying to passively get past the problem

You don't need any exercises you just practice.

I think you may use too much force on your thumb. Keep it relaxed. Thumbaround isn't a trick where you have to use a lot of force, let alone on your thumb.

I find that understanding the reason why you fold your Thumb usually helps people break the habit.

If I'm not mistaken, you're probably folding it for one of these two reasons:

    1. As you push with the middle finger, you're also doing a movement with the Thumb in the opposite direction.

This is because you probably feel you need more pressure to get the pen around your Thumb. But the truth is...you hardly need any pressure...as you get more advanced, the smoother you get, the less pressure is needed. Just remember that the Thumb just act as a resistance/pivot point. The middle finger does all the pushing.

    2. As you see the pen spin around, you have an instinctive urge to catch the pen, and you fold your Thumb to try to catch the pen. But why do you fold your Thumb? It's because we're too used to using our Thumb to pick stuff up...it is, after all, the most independent of our fingers.

To overcome this, don't worry about catching the pen until you're comfortable with the spin. Just let the pen drop and watch the rotation until it becomes smooth and always land in the right spot. then finally just use your index finger to catch the pen.

    good luck

When a thread gets moved, it leaves a 'shadow' thread in the forum it was in before.

i thank you all for the advice and im doing all you said, ive been practising for hours but my thumb just wont stop moving,im relaxing it as much as possible etc but, from the starting position my thumb just instantly moves to my middle finger meaning theres nothing for it to spin around and its very frustrating now,a friend said i should try wrapping selo-tape around all of my thumb so it cannot move or something similar, would this be any good?

Try just concetrating on your thumb and nothing else. Don't even worry about catching the pen/pencil. Just try to get it so that it rolls around, Also don't try to make the pen go around WITH your thumb. Your thumb doesn't push the pen your middle finger does.
When I first learned It I remember how fustrated I was trying to get my thumb to not move, but after a couple hours I got it.
Just keep trooping forward ;D =) good luck.

brimbo, if you need specific help for the thumbaround, consult the TA thread in the fundamental section.

    thumb exercises?

the thumb doesn't really do much work, most thumb related tricks are arounds... so i don't see exactly why it would need to be stronger
