Hand Care / Cracking Knuckles

Have You been cracking your knuckles lately?

Just wanted to mention this fact, if you crack your knuckles you tend to have less ofa grip than people who don't.

My mum has a friend who's a bone doctor(orthopedic? Forgot what they are called) and she says that cracking your knuckles too much may ruin your bone structure so you have less control over your fingers.

And my science teacher says that cracking your knuckles really doesn't matter, as long as you don't do it all days long for all your life. It's just because people think it can be creepy, they automatically judge it as being "bad for your fingers".

the thing, that makes your knuckles crack is some sort of gas, that builds up is between your bones when you move them. and if you bend your fingers far enough for that gas to exit, it cracks. (i hope my english is understandable^^)
i saw this explanation on television, and i hope its still correct.

Edit: no, i just saw, that it's not true.
wikipedia sais, that you build up negative pressure when you bend your fingers. and if you bend them enough, this negative pressure will be balanced

the only thing i experienced from craking my knuckles is extraordinary finger flexability

I've been cracking 2 of my 3 finger joints on each finger daily since the 2nd grade. I was 7 or 8 then I guess and I'm 21 now. I don't notice any negative ill-effects other than my knuckles being horrendously huge. In fact, I have no trouble spinning other than doing charge/sonic 13 which is due to my middle finger knuckle being large and getting in the way.

I'm no doctor but cracking your knuckles is probably bad. But you probably have to crack them for 30+ years for your fingers to suffer.

  9. UEDan

Yeah I doubt its bad. My moms been doing it for many many many years. And her hands are better than mine. Dont feel like elaborating.

There isnt any proof that cracking your knuckles is actually bad for you, people just speculate. And i'm going to have to say the the "weaker grip" is total BS. I have a grip strength of 250lbs+ which is probably more than anyone else here and i crack my knuckles often.

I, myself, am strangely unable to crack my knuckles.

Well, I suppose that's not true, but I can't do it myself. My friend usually does it, and it's often extremely painful. However, I do have another friend that cracks his knuckles often, and he seems to have very long fingers- I also believe I read somewhere that cracking your knuckles gives the illusion that you have longer fingers, because the space between your joints is larger.

"cracking knuckles is bad" is a pure urban legend lol...

i ve asked to several doctors, ( in france we call them "ostheopathes", they are bones specialists) and all told the same thing.

i guess this argument has been put by people who can't stand hearing other people knuckles crack.its had a snow ball effect, and then it became a popular belief.

im 26, i crack them since im very young, not problem yet, maybe in the future but i doubt

i'm still not cracking them to play safe.

but when i first started trying to crack them, it was really difficult.

but now, i can crack them easily on accident if i'm not careful.

ummm if you still crack you knuckles. put it to a stop. i used to crack and pop them all the time in 5th grade. but when my teacher told me about what it does i stopped altogether. first off, let me say, in 5th grade my middle finger was 4 inches long. after about a year i noticed my fingers getting shorter. about half an inch. my teacher told me that you will get arthritis and never be able to spin again. STOP THE POP

Lol firstly I think your fingers just appear shorter because your palms have gotten larger.

Secondly, many people are unsettled by the sound of cracking knuckles, your teacher probably is, and this why your teacher told you stop cracking your knuckles; don't always believe your teachers especially elementary school teachers (they probably aren't doctors...).

Lastly, arthritis is caused by joint infection/trauma or joint degradation; therefore, as long as you don't crack your knuckles habitually you'll be fine. In fact cracking your knuckles once a day is probably better for you than not cracking them at all, if you've already cracked your knuckles a lot don't suddenly stop, your knuckles will still build up gases in the joints like before; however, now you're not releasing the gas, so if you accidentally bend your knuckles to far, the release of gas will cause more damage to your joints than if you had been regularly cracking your knuckles.

if cracking knuckles is bad for the person and the ones around that person(bad cus sometimes it makes them freak out and puke happy.gif ) then here is a fact

smoking is bad for the person and around that person (second hand smoking)
drinking is bad for the person and around that person ( that person drives and creates accidents)
drugs is bad for the person and around that person ( they get high and do horroble things)

and there are other things that are not bad but makes people go like "ew"... so, if it messes up your joints (doubt it) it would be your joints and not others... its better than smoking, drinking, or doing drugs happy.gif...

  34. Elk

There isn't any proof that it's bad for you. The sound you hear is the fluids in your joints getting pushed to the other side of your joints extremely fast.

Resently I've been going to the library and studying about this and really it actually has no harm. Athritis (I hope i spelled that right) will NOT hapen by popping your knuckles and cracking them actaully will help them then hurt them.

    1. Helps flexibility
    2. Comforts your hands
    3. Makes your fingers grow a little faster and longer

    Hmm... According to that page,
    QUOTE
... however, habitual knuckle poppers did show signs of other types of damage, including soft tissue damage to the joint capsule and a decrease in grip strength. This damage is most likely a result of the rapid, repeated stretching of the ligaments surrounding the joint. ... ... But assuming you haven't signed a multimillion dollar contract to constantly pop your knuckles, it hardly seems worth the possible risk to your joints.
So, I still think cracking of knuckles should be discouraged. The short term gains do not justify the long term damages.

sometin i found on google answers...

"A lot of people say that knuckle cracking can lead to Arthritis. There
is simply no evidence to support this view. In fact a simple random
search using any search engine with the term " Cracking Kunckles" will
turn up with half a dozen front page hits saying that Kunckle Cracking
    will NOT lead to Arthritis.

"There is no evidence that cracking one's knuckles can cause arthritis
    directly
. However, repeated injury of a joint or repeatedly causing it
to swell can injure the cartilage and potentially lead to degenerative
    joint disease..."
Frequently Asked Questions about Arthritis Edited by Frederick A.
    Matsen, III

Now what about Habitual Joint Cracking as in massages etc.?
"There has been very little work done to determine the long-term
effects of habitual joint cracking. The scant literature that is
available on this topic indicates that habitual knuckle cracking may
have a direct effect on the soft tissue of the hands and there is a
case study that indicates it may also cause damage that leads to
radiologic change. However, there is insufficient evidence to make any
conclusive statement regarding the long-term effects of habitual
knuckle cracking. The knuckle crackers had approximately 75% less grip
    strength
and a higher incidence of hand swelling. Because the average
duration of the knuckle cracking habit was 35 +/- 18 years, the habit
seems to have little effect on joint cartilage. The increase in joint
swelling and the decrease in hand function indicates that habitual
knuckle cracking has a greater effect on the soft tissue than on the
bone or cartilage. However, damage to the cartilage cannot be ruled
    out...""

Quote from wikipedia, so not necessarily true:

"A single event is not enough to cause damage to the joint, although there is a hypothesis that prolonged joint stress due to cracking knuckles may eventually lead to a higher risk of joint damage. However, the long-term consequences of this practice have not been studied thoroughly, and the scientific evidence is inconclusive. The common parental advice "cracking your knuckles gives you arthritis" is not supported by any evidence, but habitual knuckle crackers are more likely to have hand swelling and lower grip strength."

I jammed my bottom knuckle when playing football once, and cracking the knuckle felt good. i then dislocated and broke my pinky (the second/middle joint) and after it healed i kept cracking it. i started cracking the uppermost joint when i jammed my finger again. it's become a habit for me, and it's REALLY hard to control, also because it feels good when my fingers are cramped dry.gif

Knucle cracking can wear down the joints and over time can be bad for them.
Repeted cracking over a long period of time will cause a noticeable difference in size. Do so at your own will.

Cracking knuckles can cause them to get bigger, but not disgustingly so. I crack 'em all the time, have since elementary school. I have big knuckles, but they look fairly normal compared to the rest of my hands. I've read somewhere that damage to the knuckles depend on how you crack them. If you yank on them all the time you can stretch out the ligaments. If you twist them you can grind on the tissue. I believe there are a few ways to do it without causing damage. I certainly hope I'm doing it the right way.

When you crack you're knuckles it creates air pockets to form at the knuckle joint. The extra space causes stretching of the mussels and makes you're fingers less responsive over time.

I don't think it may cause you any physical problem except less grip.

A year ago, i was cracking my nuckles like every 10 minutes. At this time, if i don't crack my fingers, i was feeling like if my fingers were blocked.

Now, when i'm spinning, there's this sensation again, and when I crack my nuckles, it feels waaaaay more comfortable and seems to have much flexibility.

And depends on the persons, you see here in the board some people say that it hurts when they do crack their knuckles. When I do it it's the inverse you see ? Every person is different and every person as a personnal opinion about this.

Your joints can make a variety of sounds: popping, cracking, grinding, and snapping. The joints that "crack" are the knuckles, knees, ankles, back, and neck. There are different reasons why these joints "sound off".

    * Escaping gases: Scientists explain that synovial fluid present in your joints acts as a lubricant. The fluid contains the gases oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. When you pop or crack a joint, you stretch the joint capsule. Gas is rapidly released, which forms bubbles. In order to crack the same knuckle again, you have to wait until the gases return to the synovial fluid.
    * Movement of joints, tendons and ligaments: When a joint moves, the tendon’s position changes and moves slightly out of place. You may hear a snapping sound as the tendon returns to its original position. In addition, your ligaments may tighten as you move your joints. This commonly occurs in your knee or ankle, and can make a cracking sound.
    * Rough surfaces: Arthritic joints make sounds caused by the loss of smooth cartilage and the roughness of the joint surface.

Is joint cracking harmful? If you are feeling pain when your joints pop, than you should seek a health care professional. In terms of knuckle cracking, some studies show that knuckle cracking does not cause serious harm. Other studies show that repetitive knuckle cracking can do some damage to the soft tissue of the joint. It may also lead to a weak grip and a swelling hand.

that should do it for all the people who are worried

I used to crack my knuckles a lot but I've broken the habit. Also when my knuckles are cracked it it feels like it affects my spinning.

I crack mine usually when I'm nervous. Idk why but I do it subconsciously and dont even realize I am cracking them until afterwards.
